Daniel Levy has made some very questionable decisions over the years as Tottenham chairman.

From signing up to The Super League to sacking Harry Redknapp after a fourth-placed finish, Levy has made some strange decisions at Tottenham over the years.

Speaking on Stick to Football, Glenn Hoddle has been discussing the current state of Tottenham Hotspur, and he’s noted that he believes Daniel Levy made a massive mistake at Spurs a few years ago.

Cast your mind back to early 2021, and you’ll remember that Spurs were preparing to play in a League Cup final against Manchester City.

However, just days before the game, Jose Mourinho was sacked by Spurs, and Hoddle says that decision is still baffling to this day.

Glenn Hoddle stunned by Jose Mourinho sacking at Tottenham

Hoddle shared his verdict on Mourinho being sacked just days before a cup final.

Tottenham fans were stunned when Mourinho was sacked just before such a massive game, and Hoddle says that he still can’t quite understand that decision.

“If they won something Glenn playing a brand of football that isn’t the Spurs way, should the modern fan be ok with that?” Hoddle was asked.

“They tried that with Conte. No, I think there is a massive mistake that Daniel Levy made. Jose got them to a cup final, it was a League Cup final, a stepping stone, but he sacked him on Monday, that doesn’t make sense to me and it never will. I don’t understand that at all. He brought him in to win a trophy and he has a good record against Pep and City as well,” Hoddle said.

What Mourinho said about his sacking

Hoddle says that he can’t understand the timing of Mourinho’s departure, and he’s not the only one.

Mourinho himself was baffled by this decision at the time.

Indeed, Mourinho called Daniel Levy’s decision ridiculous last year, suggesting that Spurs could’ve beaten Man City if he was left in charge.

“The most ridiculous one was a club that has an empty trophy room sacks me two days before a final,” Mourinho said.

“Tottenham have never won, won 50 years ago, I don’t remember when. I am two days before a final and I couldn’t do the final. It’s the one which doesn’t smell well.

“I had a plan but sometimes it doesn’t work. But the reality is every time I went to Wembley with Chelsea I won. I went there with Man United three times, I won twice.

“So the record was good. It was a stadium and atmosphere which I dominate well, because when you go into these big matches you need to feel comfortable, you cannot go to these matches and feel the stadium is too big.

“I had the experience to try and help the team but the final was against Man City so I would be an idiot right now to say we would have won. But a few weeks before that, we won against them 2-0 at our stadium, so the feeling was positive. But it is what it is.”

Ultimately, Spurs would lose that game 1-0 against Manchester City with Ryan Mason at the helm, and, Tottenham’s long trophy drought is still ongoing.

Who knows whether or not Mourinho would’ve won that cup final, but having a proven winner in charge rather than a 29-year-old rookie manager surely wouldn’t have hurt.
